Assam Police say Islam’s viral statement had potential to incite unrest and disrupt public order.
DIPHU | April 24, 2025 — In a dramatic development, AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam was taken into custody from his residence in Dhing following a controversial statement he made concerning the recent Pahalgam terror attack. The Assam MLA allegedly made remarks perceived as anti-national, sparking widespread outrage and drawing swift action from law enforcement agencies.
According to the Assam Police, the MLA’s statements — which went viral on social media — reportedly connected Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to the Pahalgam and Pulwama attacks. Authorities say the comments had the potential to incite unrest and disrupt public order.
In an official statement shared on social media, Assam Police said:
"Following the circulation of a misleading and provocative public remark by Dhing MLA Sh Aminul Islam, which had the potential to trigger a volatile situation, a case (Nagaon PS Case No. 347/25) was registered under sections 152, 196, 197(1), 113(3), 352, and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He has been arrested accordingly."
Islam, a sitting MLA from the Dhing Legislative Assembly Constituency, is known for his outspoken nature. However, this recent incident has drawn sharp criticism across political circles and civil society, with many calling for accountability and responsible speech from elected representatives.
The Pahalgam attack, which claimed multiple lives, has already stirred nationwide grief and condemnation. Islam's remarks, seen by many as insensitive and inflammatory, added fuel to an already tense atmosphere.
Investigations are underway, and further legal proceedings are expected. The state government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and taking strict action against any attempt to destabilize peace in the region.
