Nagaland Police Job Aspirants Protest After Gauhati HC Cancels 935 Appointments

The Gauhati High Court quashed the appointments of 935 police constables due to irregular recruitment.

Kohima: Protests erupted in Kohima as job aspirants demanded justice following the Gauhati High Court’s September 2024 ruling that quashed the appointments of 935 Nagaland police constables. The court found that these appointments, made between January 2018 and October 2019, were conducted without any recruitment advertisement, violating fair selection procedures.

Court Ruling and Protesters’ Demands

The verdict came after unemployed Naga youth filed a petition in 2022, challenging the recruitment process. The ruling directed the Nagaland government to issue fresh advertisements for police constable vacancies in widely circulated state newspapers and complete the selection process within six months.

In response, affected candidates staged a protest outside the police headquarters in Kohima, decrying what they called a corrupt system. Holding placards with slogans like “We Want Justice” and “We Are Indigenous Nagas”, the protesters urged authorities to reconsider the decision.

Memorandum Submitted to DGP

According to sources, the demonstrators submitted a memorandum to Nagaland DGP Rupin Sharma, seeking intervention to safeguard their employment. Following the protest, DGP Sharma and senior police officials reportedly held a closed-door meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton, who is also in charge of the Home Department, to discuss the issue.

Fresh Recruitment Process to Begin

The court’s directive mandates the state government to conduct a transparent and legal recruitment process to fill the vacant posts. Authorities are expected to issue new advertisements soon, ensuring merit-based appointments in accordance with the law.

As tensions continue, job aspirants remain hopeful that their demands will be addressed, and fair recruitment will be carried out without further delay.
