Guwahati to Host First-Ever Test and World Cup Matches, Making History in Northeast Cricket

Guwahati is set to make history as the first Test cricket venue in the Northeast, hosting a match between India and South Africa in November, confirmed BCCI general secretary Devajit Saikia on March 23.

Additionally, the city will also welcome its first-ever ICC Women’s ODI World Cup matches, marking a significant milestone for cricket in the region.

Guwahati Joins the Test Cricket Map

Saikia announced that the second Test of the two-match series between India and South Africa will be played at the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Stadium from November 22. This will mark the first time a Test match is held in Guwahati, expanding its status as a major cricket venue.

Women’s ODI World Cup Matches in Guwahati

Guwahati will also be among the venues for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, scheduled from September 24 to November 2. The ACA Stadium is expected to host five to six matches, bringing international women’s cricket to the region for the first time.

Recognition and Support

Saikia expressed gratitude to ICC Chairman Jay Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for their role in elevating Guwahati’s status as a key cricketing hub. The move reflects the growing importance of the Northeast in India’s cricketing landscape.

With these prestigious matches, Guwahati is poised to become a major destination for international cricket, opening doors for future tournaments and inspiring young cricketers in the region.
