New Academy to Enhance Law Enforcement Training and Security in the Region
Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Assam, marking a major step in strengthening the state's law enforcement system. The academy aims to provide world-class training to police personnel and enhance internal security measures in the region.
Modern Infrastructure and Development
Spread across 340 acres, the academy is being developed in two phases with a total budget of ₹1,024 crore. The first phase, completed at a cost of ₹167 crore, includes state-of-the-art training facilities designed to improve the efficiency and skills of police personnel. Shah expressed confidence that within five years, the academy will rank among India's top police training institutions.
Honoring Assam’s Legacy
The academy is named after Lachit Barphukan, the revered Ahom general who led the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, defeating the Mughals. This move highlights the Assam government's commitment to preserving its historical heritage while equipping law enforcement with modern training techniques.
Boosting Police Training in the Northeast
Previously, Assam’s police personnel had to travel to other states for specialized training. With this academy, the state can now train its own officers, while also offering courses to personnel from other states. Already, 2,000 officers from Goa and Manipur have undergone training at the facility, positioning it as a regional hub for police education.
Peace Initiatives and Governance
During his address, Amit Shah emphasized the central government's success in bringing peace to Assam through key agreements:
- Assam-Bodoland Accord (2020)
- Karbi Anglong Peace Agreement (2021)
- Tribal Peace Agreement (2022)
- Assam-Meghalaya & Assam-Arunachal Border Agreements (2023)
These efforts have resulted in over 10,000 former militants surrendering and rejoining mainstream society, promoting stability in the region.
Economic Growth and Future Prospects
The Home Minister also highlighted Assam's economic growth, citing investments worth ₹5 lakh crore, which are expected to generate employment and boost development. This economic expansion aligns with the state’s vision of modernization and improved governance.
The inauguration of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy marks a significant milestone in Assam’s journey towards better law enforcement, security, and economic progress, reinforcing the state’s role in national development.
