Temple Attack in Manipur Amid President’s Rule Sparks Security Concerns

Suspected Kuki militants open fire at Kongba Maru Laipham temple in Imphal East.

Imphal, Feb 28, 2025 – A fresh wave of violence erupted in Manipur as suspected Kuki militants opened fire at the Kongba Maru Laipham temple in Imphal East on Friday morning, intensifying security concerns in the region. The attack occurred just a day after the Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei group, surrendered 246 weapons in response to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla’s call to relinquish illegal arms.

Gunfire Disrupts Religious Ceremony

According to local sources, the militants fired multiple rounds from a hilltop around 9:30 AM, targeting devotees and a priest performing rituals at the temple. Despite the unexpected attack, the religious ceremony continued under the protection of state police and CRPF personnel.

Heightened Fear Among Residents

The incident has sparked fear among residents in Imphal East, with many urging Governor Bhalla to take immediate action. They have specifically requested the dismantling of militant bunkers in the surrounding hill areas, which they claim pose a persistent threat to lowland communities.

Security Challenges Amid President’s Rule

The attack underscores the ongoing security challenges in Manipur, even as the state remains under President’s Rule. While disarmament efforts are underway, the persistence of militant violence raises serious concerns about the stability and safety of civilians in conflict-prone areas.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, and additional security forces have been deployed to prevent further violence. The incident highlights the urgent need for stronger enforcement measures to restore peace in Manipur.
