Assam DGP confirms arrests after controversial video circulates on social media.
Guwahati, January 22, 2025:
In a swift action following a viral video showing the public slaughter of cattle during a picnic in Assam, six individuals have been arrested, confirmed Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh. The incident, which has sparked outrage, particularly among Hindu communities, highlights concerns over cultural sensitivity and law enforcement.
The video, widely circulated on social media, depicted the slaughter being carried out in a public space, drawing sharp criticism for its insensitivity towards religious sentiments. Sharing the development on X (formerly Twitter), DGP GP Singh stated, "Six accused persons featuring in the viral video have been arrested, and further lawful action is being taken by @GuwahatiPol @assampolice @CMOfficeAssam."
The arrests were made based on a complaint registered at Hatigaon Police Station. The accused, all residents of Chhaygaon’s Aslapara in Kamrup district, have been identified as:
- Sahil Khan
- Hafizur Islam
- Rakibul Hussain
- Zahidul Islam
- Ijaz Khan
The individuals are now in custody at Hatigaon Police Station for further interrogation.
This incident has brought renewed focus on the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, which strictly prohibits the illegal slaughter and trade of cattle in the state. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reiterated the government's commitment to enforcing the Act to preserve communal harmony and protect cultural values.
The act of sharing such provocative content online has also raised questions about the intent behind it. Many believe it was deliberately aimed at hurting religious sentiments, as cows hold deep cultural and spiritual significance for Hindu communities.
The Assam government has assured strict action in accordance with the law to prevent such incidents in the future and reinforce the importance of respecting cultural sensitivities.
