Republic Day 2025: Dibrugarh Emerges as Assam’s Second Capital Under CM Sarma’s Vision

Dibrugarh, January 26, 2025 – Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma delivered on his promise to shift the Republic Day celebrations outside Guwahati by unfurling the national flag in Dibrugarh. This historic move symbolizes the state government's vision for decentralizing governance and fostering regional development.

On September 6, 2024, CM Sarma had declared via X (formerly Twitter):
"Henceforth the Chief Minister of Assam will hoist the Tiranga on Independence Day from Guwahati, and on Republic Day from Dibrugarh."

Today, in a post on X, the Chief Minister reaffirmed his commitment:
"Promise made. Promise delivered. Tweeting this from Dibrugarh where I will unfurl the Tiranga in a short while from now."

Dibrugarh’s Transformation: From Insurgent Base to Development Hub

Dibrugarh, once known as a stronghold of ULFA insurgents, now stands as a symbol of peace and development. The decision to host Republic Day celebrations here reflects the state’s progress in overcoming militancy and creating a conducive environment for growth.

The city is set to witness a wave of infrastructure developments as outlined by the Chief Minister during his address:

  • Assembly Complex by 2027: Dibrugarh will become Assam's second capital.
  • Enhanced Connectivity: Projects are underway to improve roadways, railways, and airports in the region.
  • Industrial Growth: As a key commercial hub in Upper Assam, Dibrugarh is witnessing increased investments in tea, oil, and gas industries.

Decentralized Growth: Vision for Tezpur and Silchar

CM Sarma also announced ambitious plans for two other major towns:

  • Tezpur: Set to become Assam’s Cultural Capital, housing a Raj Bhawan. The city’s historical and cultural significance will be further highlighted through dedicated projects.
  • Silchar: Will host a Mini Secretariat and the Chief Secretary's Office, boosting administrative accessibility in the Barak Valley region.

These initiatives aim to distribute development evenly across the state, reducing dependence on Guwahati and empowering regional hubs.

Significance of the Move

This Republic Day celebration in Dibrugarh holds deep symbolic value. It underscores Assam’s commitment to inclusivity, balanced development, and honoring the unique identities of its diverse regions. The Chief Minister’s decision to unfurl the tricolor here is a powerful statement of the government’s dedication to integrating historically marginalized areas into the mainstream.

Promise of a New Assam

During the event, CM Sarma reiterated his vision:
"We are not just building infrastructure; we are building hope and unity. A developed Assam means every town, village, and citizen feels connected to the state’s progress."

This year’s Republic Day celebrations mark a milestone in Assam’s journey towards a prosperous and unified future, showcasing the state’s transformation under strong leadership.
