Dima Hasao, Assam — A tragic accident unfolded on Saturday morning in the Dima Hasao district, where a school bus carrying students from three schools overturned, claiming the life of a 10-year-old girl and injuring several others. The incident occurred between 8:00 and 8:30 AM near the 19-Kilo area under Umrangso Police Station.
The Accident: A Sharp Turn Leads to Disaster
The bus was transporting students from Sacred Heart School, Saraswati Vidya Mandir, and Garampani High School when it lost control at a sharp bend and fell into a field near a cement factory in Umrangso.
Dima Hasao Superintendent of Police (SP), Mayank Kumar Jha, explained, “The bus lost control at a sharp bend in the 19-Kilo area of Umrangso.” The vehicle overturned, leading to chaos and panic as students were trapped inside.
Victim and Injuries
Dalimir Ronghangpi, a 10-year-old Class 3 student from Sacred Heart School, succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Her body has been sent for a postmortem examination. Two other students are critically injured and have been shifted to Haji Abdul Memorial Hospital in Hojai for advanced medical care.
Other injured students include:
- Arklingson Hanse (9 years old)
- Felyha Chingthongpi (10 years old)
- Sarmukrang Terang (8 years old)
- Divya Ronghangpi (15 years old)
- Ruplin Engtipi (17 years old)
- Malyn Teronpi (18 years old)
SP Jha added, “A 9-year-old girl was declared dead by the doctors, while two others are critical. The rest had minor injuries and were released from the hospital.”
Rescue Operations
Local residents played a crucial role in the rescue operation, assisting the police in extracting students from the overturned bus. Many injured students received immediate medical attention on-site, while those with severe injuries were rushed to nearby hospitals.
Community Reaction and Calls for Road Safety
This tragic event has sparked widespread grief and concern in the Dima Hasao community. Samsing Engti, a member of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC), expressed condolences on social media and emphasized the urgent need for road safety measures.
“This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for increased road safety measures in our community. The rising number of accidents in Umrangso is a serious concern. I urge the authorities to enforce strict measures against reckless driving, drunk driving, and violations of traffic rules,” Engti said.
