Assam’s Devajit Saikia Appointed BCCI Secretary, Succeeds Jay Shah

From Assam to BCCI: Devajit Saikia Takes Over as Secretary After Jay Shah’s ICC Role

Assam’s Devajit Saikia Appointed BCCI Secretary, Succeeds Jay Shah

In a significant leadership transition, former Assam cricketer Devajit Saikia has been appointed as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), succeeding Jay Shah. Shah vacated the position to take up the role of Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The secretary’s position, which remained vacant for over a month, has now been filled by Saikia. His first major assignment as BCCI Secretary was participating in a high-level meeting alongside BCCI President Roger Binny. The meeting focused on India’s performance in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

The meeting reportedly included Indian captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir. It involved a detailed discussion about India’s recent challenges in Test cricket. Key areas of concern were noted, and measures are expected to be implemented after the Champions Trophy.

Devajit Saikia Shares His Vision

On his appointment, Saikia expressed gratitude and optimism about his new role. "I am extremely delighted and grateful to all my colleagues. I thank the ICC Chairman and former BCCI Secretary Jay Shah for his exceptional leadership and guidance. I will carry forward the work done by Jay Shah, focusing on further elevating Indian cricket on the global stage," Saikia said.

He emphasized his commitment to upholding the values of the BCCI and ensuring that Indian cricket continues to thrive, both on and off the field.

Devajit Saikia: A Multifaceted Leader

Hailing from Assam, Devajit Saikia brings a diverse professional background, combining cricket, law, and administration. As a former first-class cricketer, Saikia represented Assam in four matches during the 1990-91 season as a wicketkeeper. Despite a brief cricketing career, he accumulated 53 runs and achieved nine dismissals.

In addition to his cricketing achievements, Saikia pursued a career in law, beginning his practice at the Gauhati High Court at the age of 28. Earlier in his career, he secured positions in the Northern Frontier Railways and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) through sports quotas.

Saikia’s journey into cricket administration began in 2016 when he became one of the six Vice Presidents of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) under the presidency of Hemanta Biswa Sarma, who now serves as the Chief Minister of Assam. In 2019, he assumed the role of ACA Secretary, showcasing his leadership skills and dedication to cricket.

Charting a New Path for Indian Cricket

Saikia’s appointment as BCCI Secretary underscores his extensive experience and commitment to the sport. With his leadership and collaborative approach, he is expected to bring fresh perspectives and contribute significantly to the growth and success of Indian cricket. His focus on carrying forward Jay Shah's legacy while introducing innovative strategies promises an exciting new chapter for Indian cricket.
