THRC Orders Probe into Gang Rape of Minor in South Tripura, Calls for Justice
Complaint highlights severe human rights violation; THRC calls for swift action and justice.
Agartala, Tripura – In a move to address a grave violation of human rights, the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to conduct a detailed inquiry into the gang rape of a minor girl in Shantirbazar, South Tripura district. The report is to be submitted to both the THRC and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) by January 13, 2024.  

Incident Details  
The crime, which took place on December 13, came to light after the NHRC received a complaint from a Tamil Nadu resident. According to the complaint, the victim was abducted from near her home by two individuals and taken to a rubber plantation, where three others joined in the assault. The perpetrators later dropped the girl home late at night.  

The accused have been identified as Shaktiya Reang (18), Nivas Tripura (19), Subhash Reang (19), Lakshmidhan Tripura (18), and Jiban Tripura (21). Following the incident, the victim’s mother lodged a complaint at the Manpathar police outpost under the jurisdiction of Shantirbazar Police Station.  

THRC’s Action  
Recognizing the severity of the case, the THRC stated, “This incident involves a blatant violation of the human rights of a minor girl. The DGP has been directed to conduct a thorough inquiry and ensure the report is submitted within three weeks.” Additionally, the THRC has communicated the case details to the NHRC for further attention.  

Call for Justice  
This incident underscores the urgent need for effective law enforcement and justice delivery in cases of sexual violence. Human rights organizations and activists have emphasized the importance of swift action to hold the perpetrators accountable and to ensure the safety and dignity of vulnerable individuals in society.
