The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has started constructing a border fence along the India-Myanmar border in the Moreh region of Manipur’s Tengnoupal district. This initiative, undertaken as part of Project Sewak, is aimed at bolstering security measures and strengthening surveillance along the international boundary.
While the project seeks to address border security concerns, it has faced resistance from local communities. Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) representing the Kuki-Zo community in Tengnoupal district have voiced strong opposition to the construction of the fence. These groups argue that the fencing could impact local communities and challenge traditional boundary alignments.
Additionally, the Manipur unit of the Naga People's Front (NPF) has also expressed disapproval of the fencing project in areas inhabited by the Naga community. The NPF has emphasized the need to align the border fencing with traditional and historical boundaries before proceeding with the project.
This development highlights the complexities involved in securing international borders while addressing the concerns of local communities and maintaining harmony in the region.
