Karbi Anglong, Assam — November 5, 2024
In a significant anti-drug operation, Karbi Anglong police intercepted a truck and seized over 1 kilogram of suspected heroin, valued at approximately Rs 8 crore, on Tuesday. The bust took place during a routine checkpoint near the old Lahorijan Forest Beat office.
The Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, took to X (formerly Twitter) to commend the police for their vigilance. He posted: "Based on reliable inputs, one truck coming from a neighbouring State was intercepted by @karbianglongpol at Lahorijan Naka and 1140.58gms of heroin worth ₹8cr was recovered. Two people have been apprehended in this connection. Good job @assampolice. #AssamAgainstDrugs."
The two individuals detained in the operation, Rahidul Islam and Nur Alam, were traveling in a truck bearing registration number AS 28 AC 1322. The seized heroin, packed in 95 packets, was discovered hidden in a secret compartment of the truck, which was heading to Guwahati from Manipur.
Authorities have intensified their investigation into the case, aiming to trace potential links to larger drug networks. Police officials highlighted the need for heightened vigilance in border areas to prevent the trafficking of narcotics into Assam.
