Assam Minister: Forcing Assamese Sparked State Separations in Northeast

Silchar, Assam: The recognition of Assamese and Bengali as classical languages by the central government has bridged linguistic divides and fostered harmony between Assamese and Bengali-speaking communities in Assam, according to Assam Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the "Bhasha Gourab Saptah" in Silchar, held in Cachar district, the minister emphasized that this acknowledgment of linguistic heritage has played a significant role in uniting communities that once faced divisions.

Reflecting on Assam’s historical linguistic policies, Baruah acknowledged that past efforts to establish Assamese as the sole official language in undivided Assam were a "historic blunder." He noted that these policies had fueled a sense of alienation among various communities, eventually leading to the creation of separate states in the Northeast. "The imposition of Assamese on all communities created tensions when Shillong was the capital of undivided Assam. This sparked demands for autonomy among different groups," he stated. He also remarked on how these tensions persisted with the Bodo and other indigenous communities but thankfully did not result in further state divisions.

The Bhasha Gourab Saptah, organized by the Bangla Sahitya Sabha with support from the Assam government, celebrated the recent recognition of Assamese and Bengali as classical languages. The week-long event featured activities across Assam aimed at fostering respect and pride for both languages. The minister, who handles the portfolios of Public Health Engineering, Entrepreneurship, and Tourism, expressed hope that this recognition would continue to strengthen bonds between communities and foster a shared cultural pride.
