Guwahati, Assam – On October 8, 2024, Gauhati University hosted the State-Level Red Run Marathon, an event organized by the Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS) in collaboration with the Gauhati University Red Ribbon Club (RRC) and Gauhati University NSS Cell. The marathon, which aimed to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and promote a healthy lifestyle among the youth, saw active participation from over 200 athletes and NSS volunteers representing 15 universities across Assam.
The event was graced by prominent figures, including the Hon’ble Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare, Assam, Ms. Nandita Garlosa; Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta; Director of Students' Welfare, Gauhati University, Dr. Ranjan Kr Kakati; Project Director of ASACS, Dr. Indranoshee Das; and Joint Director of Sports and Youth Welfare, Assam, Ms. Antara Gogoi.
In her keynote speech, Ms. Nandita Garlosa stressed the vital role of sports in enhancing physical and mental well-being, while also contributing to the fight against substance abuse. She encouraged young people to adopt a healthy lifestyle and actively participate in efforts to eradicate HIV/AIDS from society.
Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University, delivered an inspiring address to the athletes, likening physical fitness and mental strength to the roots of a strong tree that supports success and well-being.
Dr. Ranjan Kr Kakati welcomed the esteemed guests, while Dr. Indranoshee Das outlined ASACS's mission to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic, along with its other awareness initiatives.
The marathon concluded with an awards ceremony celebrating the top performers. In the men's category, Khadem Ali from Gauhati University secured first place, followed by Dimasha Brahma from Bodoland University and Pranjit Das from Assam University in second and third places, respectively. In the women’s category, Sunpahi Pegu from Dibrugarh University took the top spot, with Durgamoni Bhumij from Dibrugarh University and Sandhya Chetri from Gauhati University finishing second and third.
The open category also saw notable performances, with Bharat Majhi, Rikesh Prasad, and Jubin Saikia finishing in the top three positions in the men's open race. In the women’s open category, Rupa Bodo, Mridushmita Sarania, and Oliva Roy claimed the top spots.
The event successfully promoted awareness of HIV prevention and encouraged a sporting culture among the youth. It concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Pallab Hazarika, Assistant Director of ASACS, who appreciated the efforts of all participants and organizers in making the event a success.
