Trees Outside Forest" Program Held at Dharapur to Promote Sustainable Farming

In a collaborative effort to enhance environmental sustainability and boost the local economy, the Gauhati University NSS Cell, in association with the TOFI Assam Chapter, organized a "Trees Outside Forest" (TOFI) program at Dharapur. The event aimed at educating farmers about the importance of planting trees on non-forest land, which not only contributes to a greener environment but also strengthens the economic standing of local farmers.

Dr. Ranjan Kr Kakati, Director of Students' Welfare at Gauhati University, inaugurated the program, encouraging farmers to utilize vacant spaces for tree plantations. He emphasized that increased tree coverage can lead to both environmental sustainability and economic growth. "Every step towards sustainable development by each farmer enriches our society, making it healthier and wealthier," said Dr. Kakati.
Doli Choudhury, a resource person at the event, explained TOFI's threefold strategy to increase the area of trees outside forests. This includes:
- Strengthening the legal and regulatory frameworks to promote trees on non-forest land.
- Improving access to finance, insurance, and resources for farmers.
- Bridging the gaps in technical and market knowledge through services, data, and decision tools.

Choudhury also introduced the concept of Agroforestry, a sustainable farming approach that combines trees with crops and livestock. This innovative technique enhances biodiversity, optimizes land use, and boosts farm productivity.

Mr. Bhabesh Sarma, Agricultural Development Officer of Dharapur, addressed the economic and environmental benefits of plantation, while TOFI official Mr. Manash Bora provided farmers with information about helplines and educational materials to support them in their agricultural efforts.

The program, coordinated by Bandita Deka, a GU NSS volunteer, attracted around 100 farmers and several NSS volunteers. Sikha Saikia concluded the event by offering a vote of thanks.

This initiative underscores the importance of integrating environmental and economic goals to promote sustainable farming practices in Assam.
