Assam DGP GP Singh Confirms Investigation into Violent Attack on Officials During Sonapur Eviction Drive

Guwahati: Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh has confirmed that an investigation is underway following a violent attack on government officials during an eviction drive in the Sonapur Revenue Circle of Kamrup (Metro). The attack, which took place on September 12, 2024, resulted in serious injuries to 22 government officials, and led to police using authorized force, causing injuries to 13 individuals, two of whom succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), DGP GP Singh detailed that the eviction drive, which began on September 9, aimed to clear encroachments from 248 bighas of government land in a notified tribal belt. A total of 237 illegally constructed structures were removed as part of the ongoing proceedings.

On the fourth day of the operation, government officials, including on-duty police officers, were reportedly attacked with sharp weapons, and stones were thrown at them by a group of miscreants, severely injuring 22 officers. GP Singh noted that the police were forced to use lawful measures to defend the officials, in accordance with the due process, which led to injuries among the attackers.

Following the incident, Guwahati Police have been tasked with identifying and apprehending all individuals involved in the attack. Singh further stated that the investigation will not only focus on the direct attackers but also seek to uncover any conspirators or instigators behind the violence. He assured that all responsible parties will be held accountable.

The DGP also emphasized that proper medical care is being provided to all injured, including both government officials and the civilians affected during the incident.

Authorities are now closely monitoring the situation to ensure that law and order is maintained as the eviction process continues.
