Maibang’s Historical Significance Highlighted Amid Controversy Over Dimasa Origins
Haflong, Dima Hasao District, August 13, 2024 — The All Dimasa Students' Union (ADSU) of Dima Hasao District has voiced strong concerns regarding recent statements made by J.I. Kathar on social media. Kathar’s claims suggested that while the Dimasa people are indigenous, they only arrived in Maibang in 1836—a statement he purported to be based on historical documentation.
In a formal statement, the ADSU described these remarks as historically inaccurate and deeply offensive to the Dimasa community. Maibang holds profound significance in Dimasa history, having served as the capital of the Dimasa Kingdom for many years. The suggestion that the Dimasa people only settled in Maibang as recently as 1836 disregards their rich and well-established heritage in the region.
"Such assertions, especially when presented as factual, have the potential to mislead the public and diminish the cultural and historical identity of the Dimasa people," the statement read. The union emphasized that the Dimasa people's deep-rooted connection to Maibang is well-documented and recognized by historians.
The ADSU has called on J.I. Kathar to retract his statements and refrain from spreading such misleading information in the future. The union also urged the public to respect the historical and cultural truths that form the foundation of the Dimasa identity.
"The All Dimasa Students' Union remains committed to preserving and promoting the true history and culture of the Dimasa people," said Uttam Langthasa, President of the ADSU Dima Hasao District Committee. "We expect responsible and accurate representation of our community's heritage in all public discussions."
The ADSU continues to stand firm in its mission to safeguard the historical integrity of the Dimasa people and ensure that their legacy is honored and accurately represented.
