BJP Leader Urges Meghalaya Government to Establish Camps for Displaced Tribal Communities from Bangladesh

A senior leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Meghalaya has called on the state government to set up humanitarian camps to assist Garo, Khasi, and other tribal communities from Bangladesh who have been impacted by ongoing political unrest in the region.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday, BJP Vice-President Bernard N. Marak urged the government to prepare for the possible influx of refugees. Marak highlighted the urgent need for temporary shelters and support systems for these displaced individuals, should they be granted entry into India.

Marak, who also serves as a member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, emphasized the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Bangladesh. He noted that the situation has led to significant loss of life and has heightened the dangers faced by those attempting to flee the country and cross the border into India.

To manage the situation effectively, Marak proposed leveraging the traditional Mahari system in Garo Hills. This clan-based network, he explained, could play a crucial role in identifying, rehabilitating, and ultimately facilitating the safe return of these displaced persons to Bangladesh once conditions improve.

The BJP leader's proposal aims to ensure that while immediate humanitarian needs are met, there is also a structured plan for the eventual deportation of refugees back to their homeland, maintaining both security and order in the region.
