ASSAM, 29 August 2024: In a significant move to tackle child marriage, the Assam Legislative Assembly has passed the 'Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill, 2024'. This new law requires all marriages to be registered with the government, ensuring that the legal age of marriage—18 years for girls and 21 years for boys—is strictly followed.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the passing of the Bill on Twitter, calling it a "historic day" in the fight against child marriage. He emphasized that this law will not only prevent child marriages but also act as a strong deterrent against teenage pregnancies, promoting the overall well-being of young girls in the state.
The Chief Minister also highlighted that this Bill goes beyond party politics, aiming to provide dignity and a better life for girls in Assam. He expressed gratitude to all the legislators who supported this important measure. Looking forward, the next goal is to work towards banning polygamy in the state.
This new legislation marks a crucial step towards ensuring a brighter and safer future for young girls in Assam.
