Serchhip, Mizoram – In a daring jailbreak, two Myanmar nationals escaped from the Serchhip district jail on the evening of July 6. The incident has prompted a massive manhunt by Mizoram police, as confirmed by official reports.
The escapees, identified as Lalchhanhima (44) from Leisen, Myanmar, and Lalnunnema (31), had been held in custody since June 10, 2024. They were arrested for possession of a significant cache of AK-47 assault rifles, raising security concerns across the region.
The jailbreak occurred during a scheduled recreational period when inmates were playing volleyball. As the game concluded and the inmates were returning the sports equipment to the storeroom, Lalchhanhima and Lalnunnema seized the opportunity to flee through the prison's main entrance.
"The incident happened swiftly during a momentary lapse in security. The inmates exploited the situation to make their escape," an official from the prison stated.
The superintendent of the district jail immediately filed a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the escape, triggering a coordinated search operation. Law enforcement agencies across Mizoram have been alerted, and border security has been intensified to prevent the fugitives from crossing into neighboring areas.
Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. "We have mobilized all available resources and are working around the clock to apprehend the escapees. Public cooperation is crucial in this operation," a senior police officer said.
The incident has raised questions about the security measures in place at the Serchhip district jail and prompted calls for an investigation into potential lapses that led to the escape. The authorities have assured that steps are being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
As the manhunt continues, the region remains on high alert, with security forces working tirelessly to locate and detain the fugitives. The escape of Lalchhanhima and Lalnunnema underscores the ongoing challenges faced by prison authorities in maintaining security and preventing jailbreaks.
