Nine Arrested in Major Marksheet Scam at Gauhati University
Authorities Crack Down on Illicit Grade Manipulation
Guwahati, June 27, 2024 — In a shocking revelation, Barpeta Road police have apprehended nine individuals implicated in a significant marksheet scam at Gauhati University. The investigation uncovered that grades were illicitly altered on student marksheets in exchange for monetary payments.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the issue during a visit to Barpeta on Thursday, underscoring the severity of the scandal. He confirmed that the Assam Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are jointly handling the case, which has so far resulted in eight arrests.

The scam came to light when authorities at Ganeshlal Choudhury College (GLC College) in Barpeta Road noticed discrepancies in the grades of Azizul Haque, a sixth-year undergraduate student. Following this discovery, a case was registered at the Barpeta Road police station. Initial investigations by district police proved insufficient, leading to Haque's release from custody.

Local media's reporting of the investigation's mishandling prompted Chief Minister Sarma to order a comprehensive probe. This deeper investigation revealed the involvement of multiple university and college staff members in the fraudulent activities.

Those arrested include:

Azizul Haque
Krishnan Krishnamurthy - Gauhati University staff member from Samastipur, Bihar
Ismail Hussain - Kalgachia
Alamgir Khan - Amguri, Kalgachia
Moinul Haque - Bordanga, Kalgachia
Hamez Uddin - Nagaon
Aminul Islam - Librarian at Langla College
Shivtosh Mahto - Junior computer assistant at Dhubri Law College
Abul Bacher - Langla, Kalgachia

The arrests were made through coordinated efforts by police teams from Barpeta and Dhubri. A case has been registered against the accused under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, and further arrests are expected as the investigation progresses.

This scandal has raised serious concerns about academic integrity and the security of the examination system at Gauhati University. The authorities are withholding additional comments as the investigation continues.
