Innovative Solutions for Flood Prevention
Home Minister proposes creating 50 large ponds to divert Brahmaputra's water.
In a significant move to address the recurrent flood challenges in Assam, Home Minister Amit Shah has unveiled a detailed Master Plan aimed at preventing future flooding in the region. Key among his proposals is the creation of at least 50 large ponds throughout the northeast to effectively divert excess water from the Brahmaputra River.
The initiative underscores a multi-faceted approach, integrating advanced technology and infrastructure improvements. Shah has emphasized the critical role of satellite imagery provided by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for enhanced flood and water management. This technology will facilitate real-time monitoring and more accurate predictions, enabling prompt and effective response to potential flood threats.
Additionally, Shah has highlighted the necessity of upgrading river water level forecast systems. This upgrade is crucial for providing early warnings and enabling timely evacuations and preparations. Ensuring the reliability and functionality of floodgates on major dams is also a priority, as it will prevent catastrophic failures that could exacerbate flooding.
This comprehensive strategy represents a significant step forward in mitigating the devastating impact of floods in Assam, promising improved safety and resilience for the region's communities.
