Officers Identified and Suspended: Parag Jyoti Barman, Tirtha Deka, Dhyanjyoti Tamuli, and Kalpajyoti Neog face suspension after allegedly assaulting civilians while off-duty and intoxicated.
Guwahati, June 27, 2024 — The Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam, Gyanendra Pratap Singh, has mandated the suspension of four police officers allegedly involved in the assault of civilians in Guwahati. Singh instructed the Guwahati Police Commissioner to suspend the officers immediately.
The officers in question have been identified as Parag Jyoti Barman, Tirtha Deka, Dhyanjyoti Tamuli, and Constable Kalpajyoti Neog. They stand accused of misconduct and assaulting civilians, including a woman, while reportedly intoxicated on Monday, June 24, in the Basistha area of Guwahati.
Following a complaint from multiple victims, a case was filed against the officers. According to the complainants, the four off-duty officers, who had been consuming alcohol, assaulted them without any provocation.
"We were just walking down the street when they attacked us," said Ratul Nath, one of the victims. Rina Khakhlary, another witness, stated that when she attempted to intervene, the officers, who identified themselves as police, pushed her to the ground and verbally abused her.
In response to the incident, DGP Singh ordered an inquiry on Tuesday, June 25. "An inquiry has been ordered. If the allegations are confirmed, strict legal and departmental actions will follow. Such behavior, if proven, is utterly unacceptable regardless of the circumstances," he stated on social media platform X.
The investigation is being led by Mrinal Deka, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), who has been instructed to submit a detailed report within seven days. The accused officers are currently undergoing interrogation as part of the ongoing investigation.
