Assam CM Announces 'Nijut Moina' Stipend Scheme to Combat Early Marriage and Promote Education
Financial Support to Ease Economic Burden on Families
GUWAHATI |On June 12, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled the 'Nijut Moina' scheme, a significant initiative aimed at combating early marriage among girl students and encouraging them to pursue education up to the postgraduate level.

Monthly Stipends for Girl Students

Under the 'Nijut Moina' scheme, the Assam government will provide monthly stipends to girl students enrolled in higher education institutions. CM Sarma outlined the details of the stipends:
- Girls in classes 11 and 12 will receive ₹1,000 per month.
- Those pursuing undergraduate courses will get ₹1,250 monthly.
- Postgraduate students will be granted ₹2,500 per month.

Economic Support and Educational Upliftment

The stipends will be transferred directly to the students on the 11th of each month, easing financial burdens on their families. CM Sarma emphasized the government's commitment to bearing the educational expenses of girls to ensure they continue their studies without economic hindrance.

Increase in Enrollment and Educational Achievements

CM Sarma highlighted the scheme's potential to significantly boost the enrollment of girls in higher education institutions. He compared it to a previous initiative where the government provided scooters to girls who achieved first division in their exams, which resulted in a noticeable increase in high achievers among female students.

Financial Commitment

The scheme is expected to require an annual budget of approximately ₹300-₹350 crore. However, CM Sarma noted that this amount could rise to ₹1,500 crore per year as more students benefit from the initiative.

By launching 'Nijut Moina', the Assam government aims to empower girl students, reduce early marriages, and enhance the overall educational landscape in the state.
