Aizawl, Mizoram - Early Sunday morning, 65 people from the Bawm Tribe of Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill Tracts entered Mizoram, seeking refuge from ongoing conflict in their homeland. The group, comprising 24 males, 17 females, and 24 children (14 boys and 10 girls), is currently sheltered in Vathuampui village, located in Southern Mizoram's Lawngtlai District.
The displaced individuals were welcomed by the village community leaders, who have provided them with food and shelter. Many among the group are reported to be ill, adding urgency to their need for assistance.
An anonymous source revealed that the group had to navigate challenging forest terrain to reach Mizoram, highlighting the arduous journey they undertook to escape the violence in Bangladesh.
The local district administration is actively assessing the situation to provide necessary aid and support. This influx of refugees adds to the ongoing challenges faced by Mizoram, which has already been accommodating numerous nationals from Myanmar seeking refuge from similar conflicts.
The arrival of the Bawm Tribe members follows clashes between the Bangladesh Army and the Kuki Chin National Army, forcing many tribals from the Chittagong Hill Tracts to flee for their safety.
The Mizoram government and community leaders continue to work together to address the needs of these new arrivals, ensuring they receive the required humanitarian assistance during this critical time.
