Assam Sends Strong Message Against Corruption Within Police Force
In a stern move reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance against malpractices within the state police force, the Assam government has dismissed a senior officer from service for alleged misdemeanors.
Raj Mohan Ray, who previously served as the Superintendent of Police of Darrang district, was awarded the penalty of "dismissal from service, which shall ordinarily be a disqualification for future employment" by the state government on April 1, 2024.

The decision was announced by Gyanendra Pratap Singh, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam, through a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
"In pursuance of the policy of Zero tolerance towards malpractices in @assampolice, Sri Raj Mohan Ray APS, the then Superintendent of Police Darrang, has been awarded the penalty of 'dismissal from service, which shall ordinarily be disqualification for future employment' on April 1st, 2024, by @mygovassam," the DGP's post read.
While the specific nature of the malpractices committed by the former officer has not been officially disclosed, the move is seen as a strong message from the state's top authorities about their commitment to upholding integrity and accountability within the police ranks.
This dismissal comes amid growing public demand for stringent action against corruption and misconduct by government officials and public servants.
Legal experts suggest that the dismissal penalty effectively bars the former officer from seeking re-employment in any government department or public sector undertaking, making it one of the strictest punishments in the service rules.
The Assam Police have faced criticism in recent years over allegations of custodial violence, extrajudicial killings, and other human rights violations, prompting calls for greater transparency and reforms within the department.
This high-profile dismissal is expected to have a deterrent effect on other officers and may pave the way for further initiatives to address corruption and malpractices within the state's law enforcement machinery.
