Assam CM Threatens Murder Charges Against CAA Protest Leaders

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a stern warning, declaring the state government's intention to pursue murder charges against individuals believed to have incited violence during the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma emphasized the importance of holding those responsible for the CAA protests in Assam accountable. He highlighted the role of misinformation and fake news in fueling unrest during the demonstrations.

"Many people spread false information claiming that the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act would result in the influx of 2 crore illegal immigrants into Assam. However, not a single person arrived, with only one individual registering a request on the portal," Sarma stated.

The Chief Minister specifically named figures involved in the protests, including Akhil Gogoi, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, and Gaurav Gogoi, urging them to apologize to the people of Assam and the families of those who lost their lives during the unrest.

"If they fail to apologize, I will ensure they do. They have 2 to 3 days to reconsider their stance; otherwise, we will pursue murder charges against them," Sarma warned.

Highlighting the government's commitment to gathering evidence, Sarma mentioned the use of media footage to support the case against those accused of instigating violence during the CAA protests.

The Chief Minister's strong stance underscores the state's determination to uphold law and order and ensure justice for those affected by the violence. Sarma's warning serves as a reminder of the consequences for inciting unrest and spreading false information that leads to societal discord.
