Protest Initiation: Temporary Closure Aims to Draw Attention to Industry Concerns
Guwahati, 29 March, 24: Petrol pumps in Assam and across Northeast India are set to close from 5 AM on March 30 to 5 AM on April 1, following an announcement by the North East India Petroleum Dealers Association (NEIPDA).
The decision to initiate the strike was reached during a General Meeting convened at the NEIPDA office located in Uzan Bazar on March 28.
The primary motivation behind the protest closure is a series of longstanding grievances, chief among them being the absence of commission revisions for petrol pump dealers since 2017. NEIPDA also underscores the mounting operational expenses faced by Retail Outlets (ROs), exacerbated by the failure of oil companies to address commission rate adjustments.
Despite formally communicating these concerns to oil companies through a letter dated February 3, 2024, NEIPDA contends that no action has been taken in response.
In a bid to amplify their demands and prompt action, NEIPDA has taken the step to temporarily suspend the sale and purchase of petroleum products across the region.
The move underscores the association's resolve to secure necessary adjustments and address the challenges faced by petrol pump operators, emphasizing the importance of industry-wide collaboration and responsiveness from oil companies.
