New Delhi, March 17, 2024 – The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a modification in the counting schedule for the upcoming elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. The counting of votes, originally slated for June 4, has been rescheduled to take place on June 2, 2024.
Following the issuance of Press Note No. ECI/PN/23/2024 on March 16, 2024, outlining the schedule for the General Elections to Legislative Assemblies, including those of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, the ECI took note of the impending expiration of the terms of both states' Legislative Assemblies on June 2, 2024.
Under the authority vested in the ECI by Article 324 of the Constitution of India and Section 15 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the Commission is mandated to conduct elections to the Legislative Assemblies before the conclusion of their terms.
To align with this constitutional obligation, the ECI has revised the counting date for Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim to June 2, 2024 (Sunday), ensuring that the electoral process is completed before the scheduled expiry of the Legislative Assemblies' terms.
It's important to note that this adjustment only pertains to the counting schedule for the State Legislative Assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. The dates for the General Elections to Lok Sabha-2024 and various State Legislative Assemblies remain unchanged.
The Election Commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, and timely elections, in adherence to constitutional provisions and electoral regulations.
For further updates and information regarding the election schedule, citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and announcements from the Election Commission of India.
