Assam CM: CAA Now Law, Urges End to Protests Against Citizenship Amendment Act, Focuses on Development Initiatives
Warning Against Continued Opposition: Sarma Threatens Action Against Persistent Protests

Guwahati, Assam- 10 March, 24:  Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated the firm establishment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and discouraged further protests against the law. Addressing the media on March 10, Sarma emphasized that the CAA has been in effect for over two years, rendering ongoing protests futile.

Sarma urged student organizations to abstain from organizing strikes against the CAA, cautioning that continued opposition could result in complaints being filed with the Election Commission, potentially leading to the freezing of party symbols for opposition parties.

Concurrently, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and 30 other organizations commenced a 12-hour hunger strike on March 10 to protest against the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the state.

The Chief Minister underscored the importance of prioritizing development initiatives in Assam, citing ongoing projects aimed at enhancing the state's infrastructure and economy, collectively worth thousands of crores. Sarma expressed perplexity at the persistence of protests against the CAA in a region witnessing significant progress.

While acknowledging the right to dissent, Sarma recommended seeking legal recourse through the Supreme Court for those opposed to the CAA, drawing parallels with past challenges to legislative acts.
