Diphu, 5 January, 24: In response to a concerning surge in road accidents resulting in 37 fatalities over the past year in Karbi Anglong district, the District Magistrate, Smti Madhumita Bhagwati, has issued a prohibitory order under Section 144 Cr. PC. The order, dated January 4, 2024, aims to address the growing trends of road accidents, particularly those attributed to overspeeding and drunken driving.
The order emphasizes the need to prevent dangers to human life, health, and safety, recognizing the critical role of enforcing measures to curb road accidents. The stretch from Sariahajan road to Garampani in the district is particularly highlighted in the order.
Key provisions of the prohibitory order include:
1. No Drunken Driving: The order explicitly prohibits any person from driving private or public vehicles under the influence of alcohol. This measure aims to address one of the significant causes of road accidents.
2. Speed Limit Enforcement: The order mandates that every rider/driver must adhere to the speed limit of a maximum of 60 Km per hour, in alignment with the regulations set for National Highway and State Highways.
The District Magistrate, recognizing the emergent situation and the need for immediate preventive measures, has passed the order ex-parte. It comes into effect immediately across the entire Karbi Anglong district and will remain in force until further notice, provided proper justifications.
