Morigaon, 31 December 23: In a significant development, Assam's Morigaon district witnessed the apprehension of two suspected jihadis, one of them a minor, on December 31, following an operation in Lahorighat. The individuals were reportedly captured from a hideout in South Senimari during the operation.
Identified as 70-year-old Islam Mandol and 13-year-old Mustakim, both hailing from Mymensingh, Bangladesh, the duo is said to have entered Assam through the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura on December 15. Setting up camp in Lahorighat, their presence came to light during the security operation.
Notably, Islam Mandol, who possesses a Bangladeshi passport and visa, allegedly managed to register his name on the electoral list under the identity Nur Islam in the Lahorighat constituency. This discovery has prompted the authorities to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the inclusion of a Bangladeshi national on the voter's list.
The incident raises questions about border security and the need for stringent measures to prevent unauthorized entry. Authorities are working to unravel the details of the suspects' activities and connections, emphasizing the importance of thorough scrutiny and investigation in such cases.
As the investigation progresses, concerns regarding potential security threats and the methods employed by the suspects to infiltrate the region will likely be scrutinized. The apprehension of a minor in connection with such activities further underscores the complexities involved in addressing cross-border security challenges.
