Imphal, Manipur- 30 December, 2023: In a swift turn of events, Manipur-based lyricist Akhu Chingangbam, initially reported as abducted at gunpoint, has dispelled concerns about his safety. Taking to his Facebook page, Chingangbam posted a clarification, reassuring friends, family, and followers that he is safe and sound at his home.

The confusion arose earlier today when news broke that unidentified gunmen had allegedly kidnapped Akhu Chingangbam, with reports indicating that his wife and mother were held at gunpoint during the ordeal. However, within a few hours of the incident, the lyricist, recognized for his significant contributions to Manipur's music culture and activism, was reported to have been released.

Sources suggest that the motive behind the kidnapping might be tied to Chingangbam's recent social media comments, adding a layer of complexity to the situation. Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh confirmed the lyricist's release, stating, "Akhu Chingangbam has been rescued." The Manipur police, under the leadership of S Ibomcha Singh, SP, Imphal East, are actively investigating the incident.

A native of Khurai in Imphal East, Akhu Chingangbam holds a doctorate in Physics and has consistently used his platform to advocate for human rights and social issues. The backdrop of this abduction is set against the canvas of ethnic tensions in the state, emphasizing the intricate socio-political challenges confronting the region.
