Family Claims Deceased Couldn't Bear the Brunt of Alleged Police Brutality
Guwahati, 27 December, 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed an immediate inquiry into the tragic suicide of Dipankar Gogoi from Titabor in Jorhat district. The family alleges that the young man took his own life due to unbearable police torture during an interrogation. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has called for a swift and thorough investigation into the matter.
Assam DGP GP Singh launched the investigation after the family accused the police of subjecting Dipankar Gogoi to severe mental and physical abuse. The incident has ignited concerns over the treatment of individuals in custody.
Victim's Allegations and Background:
Dipankar Gogoi, a resident of Birinasayek village, reportedly took his own life amidst allegations of torture by the police. The youth was under questioning regarding his suspected links to ULFA-Independent and his involvement in the grenade blast outside the Lichubari army base on December 14.
During the four days Dipankar spent at the police station, he allegedly faced severe mental and physical abuse. His family, devastated by the loss, discovered his lifeless body hanging from a tree behind his house.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressing concern over the incident, announced an additional Chief Secretary-level inquiry into Dipankar Gogoi's death. The inquiry, slated to conclude within 30 days, aims to uncover the circumstances leading to the youth's suicide and address concerns surrounding police conduct.
Family's Version:
The bereaved family insists that Dipankar resorted to the extreme step due to the alleged police torture he endured during the interrogation.
