Guwahati, 16 December , 23 - Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the 8th Assam International Agri-Horticulture exhibition in Khanapara today, marking a significant step toward achieving self-sufficiency in food production and bolstering agricultural income.

The three-day event, featuring participation from 11 countries, brings together government and private entities to showcase innovative ideas and engage in discussions on the agro-economy. HCM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced initiatives aimed at promoting crop diversification and supporting farmers during the inauguration.

Sarma dedicated the Darangiri Banana Market Development Project and laid the foundation stone of the Assam Seed Corporation's building, symbolizing a strong commitment to agricultural development. He also launched the corporation's logo and brand name, presenting Farmers' Awards to commendable contributors.

Highlighting the government's historic initiatives, Sarma stated, "2.5 years ago, for the first time in Assam's modern history, our government initiated the process of purchasing rice from farmers. ₹1,200 crores have been directly deposited into the bank accounts of farmers."

He further urged farmers to adopt the cultivation of a second crop and consider growing commercial trees to enhance their income, drawing inspiration from best practices observed during the Assembly election campaign.

Sarma emphasized the rich variety of agricultural products in Assam, including Tezpur's litchi, Karbi Anglong's ginger, fruits from Goalpara, and globally renowned Assam lemons and chili, highlighting their delicious taste and health benefits.

Expressing the goal of reaching Assam's agricultural produce to global markets, Sarma asserted, "Our effort is to ensure that Assam's agricultural products reach every market worldwide."

Looking ahead, the Chief Minister outlined a vision for the next two years, aiming for substantial progress in food self-sufficiency. He emphasized the desire to keep expenditures within Assam by reducing reliance on external sources for essentials, symbolized by the hashtag #AatmaNirbharAsom.

The 8th Assam International Agri-Horti Show serves as a platform for collaboration and innovation, underlining the state's commitment to transforming its agricultural landscape and fostering self-reliance.
