Cops vs. Criminal: Clash to Find the Murder Weapon
Kokrajhar, 7 December, 23: In a gripping turn of events in Assam's Kokrajhar district, Shambhu Kahar alias Banti Shil, the prime suspect in the murder case of retired government employee Tapan Chakraborty, faced severe injuries during a daring escape attempt when police opened fire.
Kahar, previously apprehended in West Bengal, attempted to flee custody during a search operation at Amguri in Kokrajhar. The police, striving to recover the machete used in the brutal attack, confronted the accused in the jungle, leading to a critical situation that compelled the officers to discharge their firearms.
The intense encounter resulted in injuries to Kahar's left leg. He was swiftly transported to RNB Civil Hospital at 2 am, with the attending doctor confirming his stable condition.
The Kokrajhar police had initially apprehended Kahar for his involvement in the murder of Tapan Chakraborty and the brutal assault on his wife, Madhumita Banerjee, at their Bhidanpally residence on November 29. The accused was arrested from Behar under Kotwali police station in West Bengal's Coochbehar district and brought to Kokrajhar police station in connection with case no 396/2023 U/S 448/326/307/302/380 IPC.
Addressing the media at the Kokrajhar Sadar Police Station, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime Investigation Wing) Prithviraj Rajkhowa disclosed that several cases are pending against Kahar in Katwali police station, West Bengal, and also in Kokrajhar.
