ASSAM, 12 December 2023: In recent developments surrounding the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) scandal, Nanda Babu Singh, the former principal controller of APSC examinations, has been placed under three-day police custody. Simultaneously, reports reveal that Wahida Begum, the Superintendent of Taxes in Karbi Anglong district, is now in 14-day judicial custody.
Both individuals appeared before the court today following the conclusion of their initial two-day police custody period. The arrests are linked to the ongoing investigation into the notorious APSC cash-for-job scam.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police apprehended Nanda Babu Singh on Monday, adding another name to the list of individuals implicated in the recruitment scam. Wahida Begum, arrested from Diphu, is also a key figure in this unfolding controversy.
Earlier on November 29, Rakesh Das, an Assistant Employment Officer, was arrested in connection to the same scandal. The Assam Government has taken significant action, suspending a total of 21 civil servants in connection to the APSC scam. Among the suspended officers, 11 belong to the Assam Police Service (APS), four are Assam Civil Service (ASC) officers, and the rest represent various roles within the government.
This development adds to the ongoing saga, shedding light on the widespread impact of the APSC scandal and the government's commitment to addressing corruption within its ranks.
