Behind-the-Scenes of the Election Day Hiccup in Mizoram: EVM Malfunction Resolved
Aizawl, Mizoram - November 07, 2023: In an unexpected turn of events, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga experienced a delay in casting his vote during the ongoing state election. The incident occurred at the 19-Aizawl Venglai-I YMA Hall polling station, where a malfunctioning Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) disrupted the electoral process.
Despite waiting patiently for the technical glitch to be resolved, it became apparent that the issue could not be rectified promptly. This prompted Chief Minister Zoramthanga to make the decision to postpone his vote until after his morning meal, further emphasizing the importance of a smoothly functioning EVM in the electoral process.
The Chief Minister expressed his frustration, stating, "The machine was not working. I was waiting for some time. As the machine is not working, I shall visit my constituency and I will vote after my morning meal." This unforeseen delay highlights the significance of a functional EVM system in ensuring a smooth and efficient electoral process.
The ongoing election in Mizoram has garnered significant attention, with over 8.57 lakh voters and 174 candidates vying for positions in the state legislature. The election has become a closely contested battle, involving key political players such as the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), the Zoram Peoples Movement (ZPM), the Congress, and the BJP.
Chief Minister Zoramthanga, who leads the MNF, expressed confidence in his party's ability to secure a substantial number of seats and regain power in the state government. He cited their effective handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and various developmental initiatives as pivotal factors that could sway voters in their favor.
