17-year-old Victim of Acid Assault While Returning from Local Book Fair
Barpeta, Assam - 21 November, 2023: In a harrowing incident unfolding in Assam's Barpeta district, a 17-year-old girl from Kayakuchi in Sarukhetri constituency became the victim of a shocking acid attack on November 19. The distressing episode occurred as the young girl and her sister were returning from a local book fair, highlighting the vulnerability of individuals to such heinous acts.
The alleged attacker, identified as Rafijul Islam, is reported to be a spurned lover of the victim. The incident swiftly led to the victim's evacuation to Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College & Hospital in Barpeta by locals. However, due to the severity of her condition, she was subsequently transferred to Gauhati Medical College & Hospital for advanced medical care.
Expressing anguish and seeking justice, the victim's father stated, "I want the authorities to give us justice. I know the attacker. His name is Rafijul Islam. I have lodged an FIR with the police. She is currently at the GMCH in Guwahati."
Promptly after the incident, an FIR was filed, leading to the apprehension of Rafijul Islam from his residence in Bhinga village. Notably, the police discovered burn marks on the accused's body, further underscoring the severity of the acid attack. As a result, Rafijul Islam was admitted to Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Hospital for necessary medical attention.
While the accused receives medical care, law enforcement continues its investigation into the disturbing incident. The urgency for justice in this case is paramount, reflecting the broader societal concern over such reprehensible acts.
