Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu Resigns as President of Naga People's Front (NPF) After 20 Years
Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu's Resignation Marks a Pivotal Moment in NPF's History and Nagaland's Politics
Kohima, Nagaland - October 22, 2023: Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu, a prominent figure in Nagaland's political landscape, has stepped down from his long-standing position as the President of the Naga People's Front (NPF), marking the end of a remarkable era in the party's history.

Liezietsu formally announced his resignation during the NPF's general convention and foundation day celebrations held at the Capital Cultural Hall in Kohima, a momentous event that drew attention from across the state.

Apong Pongener, the NPF's diligent Working President, is set to take the reins as the next leader of the party. This transition signals a new chapter in the party's journey, as they bid farewell to Liezietsu, who held the position for nearly two decades.

Liezietsu's connection with the NPF runs deep, dating back almost twenty years, encompassing the transformation of the party from the Naga People's Convention to the Naga People's Front. His enduring commitment and leadership have made him the longest-serving President in the history of the NPF.

Notably, Liezietsu's political career extends beyond his role as NPF President. He entered the political arena as a member of the United Democratic Front in 1969 and continued to contribute to the party in various capacities. Over the years, he has been elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) eight times, showcasing his strong grassroots support.

Throughout his career, Liezietsu has held several vital portfolios, serving the people of Nagaland. In 2003, he secured a seat in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly as the Naga People's Front candidate in the Northern Angami-I constituency, a victory that subsequently led to his appointment as the Minister for Urban Development.

His political journey reached its zenith on February 22, 2017, when he was sworn in as the 17th Chief Minister of Nagaland, a role that came with immense responsibility and expectations.

In the 2008 election, Liezietsu retained his constituency and was once again appointed as the Minister for Urban Development, and this time, he added the Higher and Technical Education portfolio to his responsibilities, further underscoring his commitment to the progress and development of Nagaland.

As Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu embarks on a new chapter in his life, his legacy within the NPF and Nagaland's political history remains indelible. His dedication and service have left an indelible mark, and his successor, Apong Pongener, faces the challenge of carrying forward this distinguished legacy in the ever-evolving political landscape of Nagaland.
