In a momentous celebration of nature and progress, Assam's Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, inaugurated the stunning 11.7-acre Botanical Gardens at Fancy Bazar today. This magnificent project, constructed at a cost of ₹58 crores, promises to be a green haven within the bustling heart of the city.
The newly unveiled park boasts a wide array of attractions designed to captivate visitors of all ages. Among its many features are:
🌳 Over 85,000 Tree Species: The Botanical Gardens house a diverse collection of over 85,000 tree species, offering a rich tapestry of greenery for nature enthusiasts to explore.
🛕 Ancient Temple, Lotus Pond, and Rejuvenated Waterbody: Adding to the park's charm, visitors can discover an ancient temple steeped in history, a serene lotus pond, and a beautifully rejuvenated waterbody where tranquility reigns.
🏃 2.5 km Jogging Track, Children's Play Area & Yoga Corner: For those seeking active pursuits, the park offers a well-maintained 2.5-kilometer jogging track, a vibrant children's play area, and a peaceful yoga corner for mindfulness and relaxation.

Ashok Singhal, a distinguished Cabinet Minister of Assam, expressed his delight at being part of this grand inauguration. He took to X to share his sentiments, saying, "Overjoyed to be present at the inauguration of the dazzling, verdant Botanical Garden by our Hon’ CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma at the Old Jail premises in Fancy Bazar."
The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Hon’ Member of Parliament, Smt. Oja Queen, Chairman of GMDA, Shri Narayan Deka, GMC Mayor Sri Mrigen Sarania, and several other distinguished dignitaries.
Ashok Singhal's heartfelt words revealed the personal significance of this transformation. He shared, "This place also holds a special, personal significance for me. It was in these very premises that I used to visit my father Late Parmananda Singhal, who was jailed by Indira Gandhi during the dark days of Emergency. Then an ugly symbol of tyranny, it gladdens my heart to see these very premises transformed into a shining beacon of freedom & progress today."
Reiterating the awe-inspiring transformation, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his satisfaction, stating, "The transformation – from a jail, which also housed Loktantra Senanis, to a huge green oasis in the heart of the city, is really gratifying.
