Assam concludes a years-long battle as DNLA insurgents lay down their arms, achieving peace and unity.
Haflong, Assam – 30 October , 2023: In a historic moment that has been years in the making, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma proudly declared the end of insurgency in Assam's tribal areas. Backed by the unwavering support of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, Assam solidified its triumph over violence in April 2023 with the signing of a groundbreaking peace deal with the Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA).
Today, a sense of hope and unity swept through the hills of Haflong as 181 DNLA insurgents voluntarily laid down their arms. Each of these courageous individuals was offered a fixed deposit of ₹4 lakh, symbolizing the government's commitment to reintegrating them into mainstream society and ensuring their brighter future.
The journey to this extraordinary milestone commenced in May 2021 when Assam launched a mission to encourage insurgents to choose the path of peace over violence. Nearly 7,200 insurgents have since responded to this call, making Assam a beacon of hope for regions affected by prolonged conflict. Perhaps most notably, the region has not witnessed a single life lost to extremist violence since May 2021, an awe-inspiring contrast to the devastating loss of over 400 lives two decades ago.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma underlined the monumental importance of this achievement, stating, "Making Assam insurgency-free is pivotal to our ambition of ranking among the top 5 states in Bharat." This newfound era of peace and stability not only improves the lives of Assam's residents but also paves the way for economic growth and development.
With tranquility restored, Assam now stands on the precipice of a brighter future. This future will be shaped by the collective support and blessings of its people, as the state marches towards the vision of a 'সোণালী অসম' (Golden Assam), a land characterized by prosperity, unity, and harmony. This historic peace deal serves as a testament to the transformative power of dialogue and diplomacy, even in regions marked by protracted conflict.
