Guwahati, Assam, September 5, 2023: The Guwahati Police Commissionerate has launched a search operation to locate Woman Police Constable (WPC) Gayatri Hazarika, who mysteriously disappeared on the evening of September 4, 2023. Constable Juri Baishya, her roommate, reported her absence, expressing concerns about Hazarika's health and emotional state.
According to Constable Baishya, WPC Gayatri Hazarika left their rented accommodation around 6 pm on September 4, stating that she was heading to Amingaon for official duty. However, she failed to return, and all attempts to contact her proved futile.
In the early hours of September 5, 2023, a police team from the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS), attached to the Jalukbari Operational Police (OP), discovered personal belongings believed to belong to WPC Gayatri Hazarika on the old Saraighat Bridge. These items included a mobile phone, a pair of spectacles, and footwear.
WPC Gayatri Hazarika's service records reveal that she joined the Assam Police in 2008 and had been serving at the Police Commissionerate in Guwahati since October 1, 2015. Her recent posting was at Paltan Bazar Police Station from August 27, 2020. She had been on leave due to severe health issues since July 14, 2023, and after returning to duty on August 20, 2023, she was advised by the OC of Paltan Bazar PS to take further rest due to her health condition.
In response to speculations circulating in the media, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Admin.) Cum PRO for the Police Commissionerate in Guwahati clarified that no "suicide note" has been discovered by the police thus far. Additionally, it was confirmed that WPC Gayatri Hazarika was not assigned to duty for the Silsako eviction program, as she had been exempted due to her health.
The search for WPC Gayatri Hazarika continues, and authorities are appealing for any information that could help locate her. The Guwahati Police Commissionerate remains committed to ensuring her safe return and will provide updates on the ongoing investigation as they become available.
