The Dental Council of India, in collaboration with the Central Government's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (Dental Education Section), formally recognized the expansion of dental education in Assam. In a notification issued on September 12, 2023, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated that this recognition is granted under the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 10 of the Dentists Act, 1948 (16 of 1948).
The amendment to the Dentists Act involves the inclusion of new entries in Part-I of the Schedule to the Act. Specifically, these entries pertain to the recognition of Dental Degrees awarded by Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, Guwahati, Assam, in respect of BDS students of Government Dental College, Silchar, Assam. The amended entries read as follows:
Government Dental College, Silchar, Assam
Bachelor of Dental Surgery
(With 50 seats if granted on or after 02.02.2023)
This recognition marks a crucial milestone in Assam's efforts to expand its medical education infrastructure. With three operational dental colleges and plans for an additional one on the horizon, Assam is poised to become a prominent destination for dental education in India.
The move is expected to not only provide aspiring dental students with more opportunities but also contribute to the overall improvement of healthcare services in the state. As Assam continues to make strides in medical education, it reinforces its commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and quality for its residents.
The recognition of these dental colleges signifies a brighter future for dental education in Assam and reflects the state's dedication to nurturing healthcare professionals who can make a meaningful impact on the nation's healthcare landscape.
