Assam Doctor Threatened for Religious Conversion; CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Directs Police Action
Female Doctor in Assam Faces Threats for Religious Conversion; CM Orders Investigation
Dibrugarh, Assam: In a startling video that surfaced on social media on September 3rd, 2023, Dr. Alima Akhtar, a doctor from the Assam Medical College and Hospital, revealed her harrowing ordeal, alleging threats from her family due to her conversion to Hinduism. She also claimed that her family was attempting to force her into an unwanted marriage with an older Maulana. As the video rapidly gained traction on the internet, Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, swiftly took action, instructing the Director General of Police to launch a thorough investigation into the matter and ensure justice is served.

In the video statement, Dr. Alima Akhtar, appearing composed and safe in an airport, disclosed the distressing circumstances she faces, saying, "My name is Dr. Alima Akhtar, and I am making this video to state my situation. As you can see, I am in a secure environment at the airport. However, the problem lies within my family, who have threatened me with death for two reasons. Firstly, I embraced the Hindu faith, which has caused several family members to want to harm me. I receive death threats daily, and protecting my life is my fundamental right."

She continued, "Secondly, my family has falsely accused me of kidnapping and filed a case against me, aiming to have the police apprehend me and return me to them, after which they intend to forcibly marry me to a Maulana. They believe that by marrying a significantly older Maulana, I will secure a place in Jannat in the afterlife and avoid Jahannum. I strongly disagree with this, which is why I have distanced myself from them."

Dr. Alima Akhtar asserted, "I refuse to comply with their wishes and do not wish to be forcibly married to a Maulana. The kidnapping charges against me are baseless. As you can see, I am safe and free to move about. I am keeping my distance from them to live my life peacefully and pursue my studies. This is my only 'mistake' for which my family members want to take my life."

The distressed woman implored the assistance of the Assam Police, urging them to take immediate action and address her precarious situation.

The video gained considerable attention when popular Assamese Twitter user @SouleFacts shared it, urging the Director General of Police to take action in accordance with the law. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, upon seeing the video, extended his support to Dr. Alima Akhtar and wasted no time in ordering action. He called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident, emphasizing the importance of upholding the law and ensuring justice prevails.
