CM Pema Khandu's Vision for Greener Growth: Geothermal Collaboration Takes Shape
Itanagar, September 28, 2023: In a significant move towards embracing clean and sustainable energy sources, the Arunachal Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Pema Khandu, has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI). This collaboration aims to assess the potential of harnessing geothermal energy from the state's natural hot springs.
The utilization of geothermal energy presents an exciting opportunity for Arunachal Pradesh to tap into a clean and renewable energy source. Geothermal power is harnessed by tapping into the Earth's natural heat, and Arunachal Pradesh's rich reservoir of hot springs makes it a prime candidate for such an endeavor.
Under the terms of the MoU, the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) will conduct comprehensive geological, geochemical, and geothermal investigations at selected hot spring sites in the Tawang and West Kameng districts. These preliminary investigations will serve as the foundation for assessing the feasibility of harnessing geothermal energy in the state.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed his confidence in the collaboration, highlighting its potential to contribute significantly to the state's environmental and economic goals. He affirmed, "I am confident that this collaboration will go a long way in realizing the goal of #greengrowth."
The partnership aligns perfectly with the nation's drive towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. It also supports the broader mission of achieving the vision of a cleaner and greener India, as advocated by the Prime Minister's Office (@PMOIndia) and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (@moefcc).
This significant step towards exploring the geothermal potential of Arunachal Pradesh's hot springs underscores the state's commitment to environmental conservation and its ambition to reduce carbon emissions while meeting its growing energy needs. If successful, this initiative could serve as a model for clean energy adoption and sustainable development in the region, setting a positive example for the entire nation.
