Sikkim's Bold Move: Chief Minister Unveils Initiatives to Preserve Lepcha Culture
Sikkim Takes Bold Steps to Preserve Lepcha Culture.
SIKKIM, 9 August 2023: In a significant stride towards preserving the rich Lepcha heritage, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang of Sikkim unveiled a series of initiatives during a state-level event commemorating the revered Tendong Kho Rum Faat festival.

Chief Minister Tamang announced plans to construct a dedicated Lepcha Bhawan in the state capital, aimed at becoming a vibrant center for Lepcha cultural activities. Highlighting the importance of collaboration, he urged the Sikkim Lepcha Association to find suitable land for this landmark building.

The Lepcha community, recognized as Sikkim's original inhabitants, plays a pivotal role in the state's cultural tapestry. Chief Minister Tamang's commitment to safeguarding Lepcha traditions includes sending Lepcha priests and revered religious figures, known as "Bongthings," on an annual exposure journey beyond Sikkim.

In response to demands for including the Lepcha language in the Constitution's 8th schedule, Chief Minister Tamang confirmed the state government's active pursuit of constitutional protection not only for Lepcha but also for Bhutia and Limboo languages. Additionally, a committee led by Sanu Lama, a prominent figure in Nepali literature, aims to restore original names of locations in Sikkim that have changed over time.

Acknowledging the need to increase reservation for primitive tribes from the existing five percent, Chief Minister Tamang assured the Lepcha population that their concerns would be carefully examined in consultation with relevant authorities.
