Ministry of Home Affairs Approves Additional Helicopter Routes to Connect Manipur
Ministry of Home Affairs Approves New Inter-State Helicopter Routes Under Existing Subsidy Scheme
In a significant development, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has granted its seal of approval to the operation of inter-state helicopter services on two new routes, within the framework of the existing 75 per cent Helicopter Subsidy Scheme. This decision comes after a recent visit by a delegation from the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), during which the subject of helicopter services was prominently raised with the Home Minister.

The official communication issued by the MHA emphasizes that the newly sanctioned helicopter routes hold strategic importance and are envisaged to serve as crucial links between remote regions. The notification states, "With due consideration to extraordinary circumstances, the MHA grants preliminary approval for extended flying hours to the State in the event that the existing annual ceiling of 750 flying hours is surpassed due to the commencement of these two new routes. In cases where this occurs, a formal proposal for an increase in flying hours must be submitted to the MHA."

The two newly approved inter-state helicopter routes are set to connect Churachandpur in Manipur with Aizawl, Mizoram, and Kangpokpi/Senapati in Manipur with Dimapur, Nagaland. These routes are projected to enhance accessibility and connectivity to these regions, which have often grappled with infrastructural limitations.

It is noteworthy that the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) had included the establishment of a Helicopter Service as a crucial point of discussion during the recent visit of Amit Shah, the Home Minister, to Churachandpur on May 30, 2023. The approval of these new routes is seen as a progressive step towards addressing the infrastructural deficits in these areas and improving the lives of the residents.

As the Ministry of Home Affairs paves the way for these inter-state helicopter services, it marks a collaborative effort to bridge geographical gaps and foster development in these remote pockets of the country. This positive stride also underscores the importance of addressing the unique challenges faced by such regions and tailoring solutions to suit their specific needs.
