New Delhi: In a significant move to address the ongoing crisis in Manipur, a delegation of the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) from the state engaged in a high-level meeting with the Union Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah, on August 9. The meeting, which took place in the national capital, Delhi, aimed to find solutions to the violence-ridden situation in the region.
During the deliberations, the ITLF representatives, led by spokesperson Ginza Vualzong, engaged in extensive discussions with Minister Shah. A key focus of the talks was the burial of tribal individuals who tragically lost their lives in the recent ethnic clashes. Speaking to India Today NE, Vualzong stated that the burial site proposed for the victims fell within the conflict zone, prompting the Home Minister to encourage the ITLF to seek an alternative location.
Vualzong revealed, "We communicated to Amit Shah our commitment to consult our community members and arrive at a decision regarding an alternative burial site." The leaders highlighted their intent to prioritize the sentiments and well-being of their community while addressing this critical matter.
Addressing broader political demands, Amit Shah urged the tribal leaders to prioritize peace and refrain from resorting to violence as they pursued a political resolution to their aspirations for a 'separate administration.' This emphasis on peaceful means underlines the significance of a stable environment for productive negotiations.
To quell the ongoing violence and maintain tranquility in the affected regions, Minister Shah announced plans to reinforce security measures in the buffer zones. This strategic move aims to ensure that both conflicting sides can coexist without further escalation.
In a noteworthy development concerning the educational future of Manipur's students amidst the tumultuous situation, Amit Shah offered assurances to facilitate the transfer of students to universities and colleges in other states. This gesture seeks to provide a conducive environment for their academic pursuits, allowing them to continue their education in secure and nurturing settings.
The ITLF delegation further revealed that Minister Shah consented to the provision of helicopter services connecting Churachandpur to Aizwal and other hill districts. This gesture is set to enhance accessibility and connectivity, benefiting the tribal communities in these remote areas.
Amidst the challenging circumstances, the ITLF is actively collaborating with the Centre to identify the deceased individuals in Imphal and ensure their respectful return to their respective home districts. Vualzong affirmed, "The identification process is underway, with just nine bodies left to be identified before their repatriation."
The ITLF leaders journeyed to Delhi through Aizawl, the capital of neighboring Mizoram, marking their commitment to engage constructively with national authorities to address Manipur's pressing issues. This proactive approach comes in response to an invitation extended by Amit Shah himself, signifying the government's willingness to engage in dialogue and collaborate towards a lasting resolution.
As the situation continues to unfold, the outcome of these deliberations holds the promise of fostering stability, peace, and a way forward for Manipur's tribal communities.
