The spark of rebellion ignited when the British introduced the infamous Enfield rifle, which required the soldiers to bite off the ends of cartridges greased with animal fat. For Hindus, cows were sacred, and for Muslims, pigs were considered unclean. Consequently, using such cartridges was a direct affront to their religious beliefs, leading to widespread discontent among the sepoys.
Mangal Pandey, with unwavering bravery, took a stand against this injustice. On March 29, 1857, in Barrackpore, he refused to use the greased cartridges and rallied his fellow sepoys to join him in protest. His fearless actions exemplified the spirit of resistance against the British oppression.
The British authorities, fearing a potential mutiny, arrested Mangal Pandey, hoping to quell the brewing discontent among the sepoys. However, this move only added fuel to the fire.
